This new opus is completely dedicated to her son who at the age of 12 was diagnosed with autism (spectrum). The experience of caring for his son inspired him to create the most important project of my career: Life & Umbrella.
My 12-year-old son was diagnosed under the autism umbrella (spectrum) a few years ago. The experience of caring for my son inspired the most important project of my career: Life & Umbrella, my upcoming 2nd album with Imagery Converter.
– Javier Red
The 12 tunes describe a kid’s emotions, internal world, and life with autism, as well as how parents experience it. Whereas persons under the autism umbrella undergo extensive therapies to communicate with neurotypical persons, there is little being done to teach neurotypicals to understand autistic persons. Through music’s unique ability to create emotional connections with others, I hope to contribute to filling that empathy gap.
This music invited a different set of assumptions and insights to be discovered, manifested, and woven into our sound. We’ve had to explore an organic rhythmic approach not tied to conventional meters or recognizable jazz grooves. Achieved through several years of dedicated collective work, the result is music that is intuitive but also, seductively puzzling.
In 2019, we released Ephemeral Certainties, our debut album on the historic Delmark Records, and it was selected as the NPR Jazz Critics Poll best debut albums of 2019.
